- UAE Zero Waste is 75% diversion from landfill. We achieved 87%
- 18 volunteers from 3 different waste management companies to assist with rubbish sorting
- In 3 days, 23,000 people attended and 87% of waste was diverted from landfill which equated to 4000kg of resources recycled
- 1300 cocktails served from the Zero Waste Bar in stainless steel cups without straws or napkins
What does this mean? We saved:
- 8 Trees
- 193 Barrels of oil – enough to drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back again 6 times a week for a year
- 13,000 Litres of water (that’s 500ml per festival goer)
- 4580 kWh of electricity – enough to charge all festival goers’ mobiles for 2.5 months
Objectives.
After a successful 2017 with multiple Corona Sunsets events varying in size, the remit was to work on a large-scale Corona Sunsets Festival, to incorporate the new bamboo look and feel, and the theme of sustainability.
The Project.
We teamed up with an environmental consultant to create The Clean Waves Collective comprising bartenders, artists, retailers, waste management companies and designers all with an eye for the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle.
All staging to showcase the two headline acts was reusable (think scaffolding back to the warehouse) and all branding was either painted on upscaled wood or printed on paper and cardboard that is easily recyclable. Separated rubbish bins were dotted across the venue and food was served on recyclable plates with compostable cutlery. Even the body glitter was biodegradable!
We set up a Zero Waste Bar that encompassed both a fun and educational element. Guests could sign up for a 20-minute slotto learn about making sustainable cocktails – using and reusing food to make things like fruit leathers as garnish until it had been exhausted and only then put on the compost pile.
Corona Sunsets Festival won Best Music Event at the 2019 MESE Awards.
